Executive summary

Construction is to begin at once on the 400 MW / 800 MWh Hunterston BESS in North Ayrshire, Scotland, after Revera Energy closed project financing and issued a notice to proceed. Sungrow will supply the batteries, and commercial operation is expected in the third quarter of 2028.

Backed by Carlyle, Revera Energy develops, builds, owns and operates energy projects across Australia and the UK as an independent platform, and it has closed project financing to construct the 400 MW / 800 MWh Hunterston battery energy storage system (BESS) in North Ayrshire, Scotland. The financial close follows the final investment decision Revera announced in June 2026.

The site lies approximately 50 km south-west of Glasgow and north of the B6 boundary, which is one of the UK's most persistent power grid bottlenecks. Revera has said that the project will contribute to grid resilience and will help to unlock the key transmission bottleneck that separates wind generation in Scotland from electricity demand in England.

In terms of its specifications, the battery will have a capacity of 400 MW / 800 MWh, which corresponds to a duration of two hours. The BESS is to be supplied by Sungrow, which will also provide a long-term service agreement.

With the financing in place, Revera has issued a notice to proceed (NTP), and construction is to commence immediately, with commercial operations at Hunterston expected in Q3 2028.

For the construction phase, OCU Group has been engaged as the balance of plant contractor, and it will also serve as the operations and maintenance (O&M) provider. Revera itself will oversee both construction and long-term asset management.

The non-recourse senior debt financing has been provided by Santander, Barclays, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and NatWest. In addition, Danske Commodities and bp will deliver trading and optimisation services, with bp offering a long-term tolling structure and Danske Commodities a long-term floor structure.

The company regards Hunterston as the next step in establishing itself as a leading BESS developer, owner and operator in the UK, and it has called the project a crucial part of its continued support for the UK's Clean Power 2030 Action Plan.

Ron Kiecana, Acting Head of Revera UK, said that the company was delighted to complete the financing for Hunterston BESS, which he described as a key milestone that enables the construction of this critical project. Sam Lewis, Senior Project Manager on Hunterston BESS, added that achieving financial close and NTP was a strong indication of the team's ability to secure top-tier supply chain relationships and unlock financing in an impressively short period of time.

Beyond Hunterston, Revera has up to an additional 400 MW / 1,600 MWh of BESS capacity with approved planning consents, land rights, grid access (NESO Gate 2) and 15-year capacity market contracts, and construction on this capacity is proposed to commence over the coming months. With up to 1 GW / 2.8 GWh, Revera's UK BESS portfolio is set to become one of the largest BESS platforms in Europe.
