EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A new joint venture will develop 700 MW (approx. 1.5 GWh) of utility-scale battery storage across two transmission-connected sites in Germany, with potential expansion to 1.4 GW. The projects will connect directly to TenneT’s ultra-high-voltage grid and are planned using CATL battery energy storage technology.

Munich-based BESS project developer enerpeak and BESS Broadway have entered into a joint venture to develop 700 MW, or approximately 1.5 GWh, of firmly reserved utility-scale battery energy storage capacity in Germany. The partnership also has the potential to expand by another 700 MW, with applications already underway to increase the portfolio to a total of 1.4 GW.

The initial portfolio consists of two transmission-connected battery storage projects located in Southern and Northern Germany. enerpeak and BESS Broadway will jointly advance both projects to Ready-To-Build (RTB) status over the coming years. The facilities will connect directly to TenneT’s ultra-high-voltage grid, with the projects intended to support grid stability and renewable energy integration.

The projects are planned around battery energy storage technology from CATL. According to the announcement, BESS Broadway maintains a technology partnership with CATL across its portfolio, providing access to technology and manufacturing capacity for projects at this scale.

The joint venture represents BESS Broadway’s entry into the German market and forms part of its expanding European portfolio. For enerpeak, the agreement builds on its development work on the two German BESS sites and establishes a platform that could support further growth.

Separately, enerpeak is progressing another German storage development with Stadtwerke Schweinfurt. The partners recently marked the topping-out ceremony for the Schweinfurt-Oberndorf battery storage project, located directly at the existing Oberndorf substation.

That stand-alone system will provide approximately 20 MW of power and 50 MWh of storage capacity. It will draw electricity from the public grid and feed it back later rather than being tied to a specific wind or solar facility. WT Energiespeicher is responsible for construction as EPC partner, with commissioning planned for Q1 2027.
