A pilot agreement will put Heron Power's solid-state transformers into RWE's battery storage site beside the Pyron Wind Farm in Scurry County, Texas, replacing low-voltage inverters and 60 Hz transformers from April 2027. The deal also sets out a path for RWE to reserve at least 500 MW of Heron capacity a year.

Heron Power, a US-based manufacturer of medium-voltage power electronics, has signed a pilot agreement with RWE Americas to install Heron Link, its solid-state transformer-based power conversion system, at an RWE battery storage facility in Scurry County, Texas. The site sits beside the Pyron Wind Farm, and installation is targeted for April 2027. Heron Power describes it as the first utility-scale pilot agreement it has signed for Heron Link.
Under the pilot, Heron Link will replace the low-voltage inverters and 60 Hz transformers the site uses today. The companies say the pilot is intended to test the technology and lead into a supply agreement covering solar and storage projects. The agreement also outlines a path for RWE to reserve at least 500 MW a year of additional capacity from Heron Power's US manufacturing, subject to the parties finalising definitive purchase agreements.
Utility-scale solar and storage projects normally convert DC into grid-ready medium-voltage AC using low-voltage inverters and medium-voltage transformers. Heron Link replaces both with a modular 5 MW medium-voltage inverter. Heron Power puts its DC-to-medium-voltage efficiency at 98.6% and its lifetime availability at 99.5%, and says the system lowers maintenance costs and carries native grid-forming controls that support local grid stability.
"This is the first utility-scale pilot agreement we have signed for Heron Link, and it is with one of the largest power solutions providers in the country," said Drew Baglino, CEO and Founder of Heron Power. Baglino said a better grid needs a fundamentally rethought equipment foundation, and that the company is manufacturing Heron Link in the United States and deploying it with infrastructure developers such as RWE.
Andrea Hu-Bianco, senior vice president of engineering at RWE Americas, said the company is eager to work with Heron Power to deploy next-generation energy infrastructure and to shape how emerging technologies are adopted and scaled. Hu-Bianco said the solid-state transformers would enable the transition to 800V DC data centre architectures and serve as a building block for integrating solar PV and BESS.
Heron Power is a power electronics company whose first product, Heron Link, lets renewable energy, battery storage and data centre developers connect directly to medium-voltage transmission without a transformer. In August 2026 it announced Heron Factory One, a 286,000 square foot plant in Morgan Hill, California, designed to produce up to 10,000 Heron Links a year, or more than 40 GW of annual capacity; the plant requires more than $100 million in investment and will add over 600 jobs, with mass production beginning in late 2027.
