ENGIE adds 1.1 GW/3.3 GWh to European battery portfolio

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Battery storage expansion across seven European countries added 1.1 GW/3.3 GWh to ENGIE’s portfolio during July and August. The developments span acquisitions, construction and operational projects, while the Group’s global storage capacity in operation and under construction has reached 10.7 GW.

French multinational low-carbon utility ENGIE has expanded its European battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio by 1.1 GW / 3.3 GWh across seven countries during July and August. This growth spans new project acquisitions, active construction sites and freshly commissioned assets across the continent. With this addition, ENGIE's total global energy storage capacity reaches 10.7 GW in operation and under construction across battery systems and pumped-storage hydropower.

Poland accounted for a major part of the expansion, where ENGIE established a 758 MW/2,156 MWh portfolio. The company has acquired the ready-to-build 250 MW/1,000 MWh Tursko Wielkie project in Osiek and advanced an adjacent 70 MW/280 MWh development, allowing the two projects to form a 320 MW/1,280 MWh facility. ENGIE also acquired a 438 MW/876 MWh project in the Łódź region. Commissioning is scheduled between 2028 and 2029.

In Romania, ENGIE has acquired a ready-to-build 54 MW/216 MWh project in Călan, expected to be online in 2029. The company already has 85 MW/170 MWh of storage under construction in the country. In Spain, it acquired a 66 MW/264 MWh project in Tarifa, scheduled to begin operation in 2029.

Construction has also started on a 74 MW/296 MWh BESS at Coo in Belgium, with commissioning planned for early 2028. In Portugal, two 10 MW/45 MWh systems are under construction alongside the Rallo and Mourisca wind farms, with operation expected in 2027.

ENGIE also reached operational milestones in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Its first two UK battery projects, at Cathkin and Broxburn in Scotland have entered operation with a combined capacity of 100 MW/200 MWh. In Lelystad, the company inaugurated the 35 MW/100 MWh BESS Maxima, its first operational battery storage system in the Netherlands.

ENGIE now has 10.7 GW of storage capacity in operation and under construction globally, including 4.7 GW in Europe and 4.4 GW in the United States. The expansion supports its target of reaching 95 GW of installed renewable and storage capacity by 2030.
