UK-based battery storage owner and operator, Zenobē, has announced plans to enter the German BESS market through the acquisition of transmission-level projects.
The announcement follows Zenobē’s expansion across the UK transmission network, where it has developed, constructed, and operated large-scale battery projects designed to provide grid services. The company currently has 1.3 GW / 2.5 GWh of battery energy storage capacity either operational or under construction. These assets are deployed to support system requirements such as frequency control, reactive power, inertia, and short-circuit support, as well as black start capability.
According to the company, battery energy storage systems are increasingly being recognised by policymakers as a technology capable of supporting grid stability in power systems with rising shares of variable renewable generation. In Germany, transmission-connected battery projects are being considered as part of broader efforts to maintain system reliability while managing congestion and balancing supply and demand.
Zenobē operates as a fully integrated platform, covering project development, construction oversight, and long-term asset management. Its portfolio includes large-scale installations connected to the UK transmission system, including projects that use grid-forming inverters to provide stability services traditionally delivered by conventional generation assets.
The company is backed by infrastructure investors KKR and M&G Infracapital and stated that it intends to build a local team in Germany to support its market entry and project pipeline. Zenobē has set a target to acquire at least 1 GW / 4 GWh of battery energy storage capacity in Germany by 2030, subject to market conditions, regulatory frameworks, and project availability.
