Zenobē, a multinational battery storage developer and operator, has acquired Bavaria-headquartered sdp energie, marking its first significant entry into Germany’s battery energy storage market. The transaction gives Zenobē access to a 1.75 GW pipeline of transmission-connected battery energy storage systems across six sites in Germany, currently at various stages of development.
The acquisition combines sdp energie’s knowledge of Germany’s regulatory environment, grid infrastructure and project development process with Zenobē’s experience in financing, delivering and operating transmission-connected storage. Zenobē has 3.3 GWh of BESS capacity in operation or under construction.
The companies plan to develop the German pipeline as demand grows for storage systems capable of supporting renewable energy integration and transmission-grid reliability. Zenobē has previously deployed grid-scale batteries providing services including inertia, short-circuit level, reactive power and black start capabilities.
Jonathan Wagner, Co-Founder of sdp energie, said Germany was positioned to become one of Europe’s important battery storage markets. He said combining sdp energie’s development platform with Zenobē’s financing, delivery and operational experience could accelerate deployment of storage infrastructure.
Johannes Steck, Co-Founder of sdp energie, said developing transmission-connected storage in Germany required local expertise and established relationships. He added that the team would now focus on converting its project pipeline into operating assets as part of Zenobē.
James Basden, Co-Founder and Director at Zenobē, said the acquisition reflected the company’s plans to support transmission system operators, regulators and energy system operators in Europe and the US as electricity systems move towards lower-carbon generation.
“We intend to buy more transmission scale projects and to work with leading offtake providers looking for a proven partner for flexibility services,” Basden said.
The German expansion follows Zenobē’s June 2026 financial close for the 200 MW/800 MWh Coalburn BESS in Scotland, a four-hour battery storage project. The company is also expanding its BESS development team in Germany.
