SUNOTEC and GEN-I Commission 50 MW Bulgaria BESS Project

SUNOTEC, a Bulgaria-headquartered renewable energy engineering and infrastructure company, has announced the commercial operation of its 50 MW/126 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Byala Slatina, Bulgaria. The project is now operating under the advanced optimization and commercial asset management platform of GEN-I, marking the first operational achievement of the companies' five-year strategic partnership announced in late 2025.  

The battery storage project represents a collaboration between the knowledge of SUNOTEC in renewable energy development and engineering and that of GEN-I in electricity trading and battery optimization. As per the terms of the deal, GEN-I will be in charge of commercial operations of the asset to help extract maximum value from it in various electricity markets. 

Battery energy storage systems are increasingly becoming an essential component of modern power systems, enabling renewable energy integration by storing surplus electricity and dispatching it when demand is higher. Through advanced optimization software and market participation strategies, operators can improve project revenues while providing balancing and ancillary services to electricity networks.  

The Byala Slatina project represents the first battery storage asset to become operational under the long-term collaboration between SUNOTEC and GEN-I. The partnership was established to combine engineering capabilities with commercial optimization, allowing battery assets to deliver long-term value throughout their operating life rather than only during construction and commissioning.  

SUNOTEC noted that its role extends beyond developing and building renewable energy projects. By collaborating with experienced commercial operators such as GEN-I the company aims to ensure its battery storage assets remain competitive in evolving electricity markets while supporting the transition toward a more flexible and resilient energy system.  

GEN-I's optimization platform is expected to manage the battery across multiple energy market opportunities, including electricity trading and flexibility services, enabling the system to respond dynamically to changing grid conditions and market signals.  

The commissioning of the Byala Slatina battery storage facility further reflects the growing deployment of utility-scale BESS projects across Europe as developers increasingly pair engineering expertise with specialized commercial optimization partners. Such collaborations are becoming a common approach to improving project economics strengthening grid reliability and enabling greater integration of renewable energy into national electricity systems.
