Aura Power is turning green lights into grid flexibility. The Bristol-based developer has officially secured planning permission from the North Somerset Council for its 100 MW Sandford Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). While the approval itself is win for regional grid infrastructure where the real story lies in Aura Power's broader evolution: the company is actively leveraging this milestone to transition into a full-scale Independent Power Producer (IPP).
The Sandford BESS will be located adjacent to an existing National Grid substation enabling the project to utilize established grid infrastructure and reduce the need for additional transmission development. The company stated that the project has been designed to minimize visual impacts while incorporating biodiversity improvements, landscape enhancements and community benefits alongside business rate contributions for the local area.
Once operational, the 100 MW battery storage facility will be capable of supplying enough electricity to power the equivalent of up to 100,000 homes during each four-hour discharge cycle. Aura Power estimates the project could avoid approximately 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions compared with equivalent gas-fired electricity generation over the same operating period by storing renewable electricity and dispatching it when demand is highest.
Following planning approval, Aura Power will continue working with National Grid to progress the project's grid connection through the UK's electricity network reform process. The company expects the project to play an important role in supporting renewable energy integration, improving system flexibility and electricity network resilience as renewable generation continues to expand.
The planning consent also aligns with Aura Power's broader business strategy. The Bristol-headquartered company is transitioning toward long-term ownership and operation of renewable energy assets after energizing its first wholly owned operational solar project. As part of this strategy, Aura Power aims to develop 1 GW of ready-to-build solar and battery storage projects across the UK by 2028.
Founded in 2013, Aura Power has developed renewable energy projects across the UK and Europe for more than a decade. The company has been active in the UK's battery storage sector since developing one of the country's early Enhanced Frequency Response battery projects and has also delivered the Feeder Road Battery Storage project in Bristol.
Battery energy storage systems are becoming increasingly important in Britain's electricity system as higher levels of renewable generation require flexible technologies capable of balancing electricity supply and demand. Projects such as Sandford help store surplus renewable electricity during periods of high generation and release it during peak demand by supporting grid reliability while reducing dependence on fossil fuel-based generation.
