InstaVolt, a leading UK-based owner-operator of rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging stations is currently undergoing a national expansion of its BESS by investing £2.5 million as of May 2026 to bring five new battery-equipped sites online. This increases their total to eight operational BESS locations in UK and planning to bring live at least 20 more locations by the end of 2026. To protect its charging hubs from high grid fees and connection holdups, ultra-rapid provider InstaVolt is launching five new battery energy storage locations to ensure their network remains future-ready.
In an investment of roughly £500,000, these five additional sites increase InstaVolt's total count of battery-integrated locations to eight. InstaVolt has at least 20 more sites scheduled for completion by the close of 2026, including confirmed expansions in York, Thirsk, Knutsford, and several other towns set for the next financial year.
Using on-site batteries allows InstaVolt to pull from stored energy when demand is high, which lowers their vulnerability to peak-time fees and significantly boosts the amount of power available to drivers at any time. By using battery capacity to bridge the gap, sites can launch with smaller initial grid connections, which drastically shortens the time it takes to get them up and running.
These new locations will complement the three active BESS sites in Winchester and Corley (North and South), which are providing the performance data used to refine the design and financial strategy for all future rollouts. The addition of 230 kVA battery storage to each of InstaVolt's Corley sites, the total power available rises to 500 kVA per location supporting about seven and eight chargers. Because of this upgrade, the amount of energy provided per session jumped by 33% at Corley South and 22% at Corley North.
At the premier Winchester Superhub, the batteries draw power from the grid during cheaper, off-peak hours and are supported by on-site solar panels. This setup allows InstaVolt to offer drivers with a consistent lower price regardless of when they charge.
In March, the network benefited from 42,000 kWh of free power generated by solar panels. While 91% of sales occurred during the 7 am to 8 pm peak window, InstaVolt managed to buy 89% of its grid electricity during cheaper off-peak hours to store in batteries. This strategy, combined with higher solar output, is allowing for a discounted summer charging rate of 70p per kWh.
InstaVolt CEO Delvin Lane has identified battery storage as a key tool for accelerating UK’s electric vehicle transition by lowering costs for drivers and overcoming grid connection bottlenecks. By storing energy overnight and discharging it during peak times, the company aims to mitigate rising demand charges and infrastructure costs for consumers.
