Executive Summary

Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has awarded Gotion High-Tech 6 GWh of battery storage capacity. The award covers about 75% of the G1 tender, which totals 2 GW / 8 GWh. Gotion will supply three sites rated at 500 MW / 2 GWh each. The project uses the Gotion Grid system, built for desert conditions and a 25-year design life.

Gotion High-Tech was established in 2006 and is headquartered in Hefei, Anhui Province. It makes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) materials and cells, battery packs, energy storage system packs and battery management systems.

The G1 program is Saudi Arabia's first utility-scale battery storage tender. It totals 2 GW / 8 GWh and is valued at roughly $1.16 billion. SPPC has awarded Gotion 6 GWh of it, which is about 75% of the capacity. Gotion secured all three core sites. They are Al Muwayah, Haden, and Al Kahafa. Each site is rated at 500 MW / 2 GWh.

Gotion Grid is the system supplied for all three sites. The contract is its first large-scale international deployment. Gotion says the system operates from minus 30°C to 55°C. A thermal management system is designed for desert use and keeps output steady during sandstorms. The company states that it cuts high-temperature degradation by 40% compared with conventional systems.

Design life is set at 25 years. An AI-based battery management system handles dispatch, safety warnings, and lifecycle diagnostics. All three sites can be operated remotely. They can be integrated into the 380 kV backbone grid.

Procurement is moving quickly. G1 has been awarded, and G2 is underway. Gotion says competition now centres on lifecycle economics and performance in extreme environments. Upfront price carries less weight in its view.

Globally, Gotion's cumulative system-level storage projects exceed 10 GWh. One is a 281 MW / 843 MWh solar-storage project in Australia. It is under construction. Commercial operation is expected in the first half of 2027.

Renewable penetration in Saudi Arabia is rising, and grid stability is a priority. The technical standards set in G1 may shape future tenders. It remains to be seen whether Gotion can turn this early position into lasting regional market share.
