Sungrow & ERS Energy cross 1 GWh battery storage milestone

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Sungrow and ERS Energy have partnered on a combined 1 GWh of battery storage projects across Southeast Asia. In Malaysia, a 441 MWh system near Bahau supports the national grid storage program. In the Philippines, a 556 MWh system built for ACEN adds grid-forming capability. Both projects use four-hour-duration batteries and mark a deeper partnership between the two firms.

Sungrow, a China-based provider of PV inverters and energy storage systems, operates globally. ERS Energy is a solar EPC firm based in Malaysia. The companies confirmed a combined 1 GWh of battery storage projects in Malaysia and the Philippines at a signing ceremony. 

Near Bahau, Malaysia, the two firms are constructing a 441 MWh battery system with a four-hour discharge duration. ERS Energy serves as the EPC contractor. The project is part of MyBeST, a national large-scale storage initiative led by the Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga, ST). As Malaysia expands its solar and wind capacity, storage systems like this one will help manage excess generation and meet peak demand. The battery is expected to stabilise grid pressure, support wider solar integration, and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants.  

 The second project is located in Manila, a 556 MWh battery system also built for a four-hour duration, developed for ACEN. ERS Energy again holds the EPC role. This system includes grid-forming capability, letting the battery actively support voltage and frequency rather than simply following the grid.  

 The Malaysian project addresses grid balancing as part of a government-backed storage initiative. The Philippine project focuses on market participation paired with grid-forming support. Together, they show how battery specifications, duration, and control features get tailored to local grid rules and market structures. 

Sungrow will keep working with partners on storage systems as more Southeast Asian countries build out renewable capacity and look for ways to manage grid stability.
