Spain-based electricity utility group Iberdrola has advanced its grid-scale battery energy storage portfolio in New South Wales, Australia, securing a long-term contract for the 100-MW Kingswood battery and commissioning the 65-MW Smithfield facility. Together, the projects expand Iberdrola’s participation in the National Electricity Market and support New South Wales’ long-duration storage and peak capacity objectives.

Spain-based electricity utility group, Iberdrola has progressed its battery energy storage activities in Australia with two developments in New South Wales (NSW), expanding grid-scale storage capacity in the National Electricity Market. The updates include a long-term contract for the 100 MW Kingswood battery and the commissioning of the 65 MW Smithfield battery in the Sydney region.
The Kingswood battery project will reach 1080 MWh storage, enabling discharge for up to eight hours. It has been awarded a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) by the Government of New South Wales under the sixth round of the state’s electricity infrastructure auctions. The facility has been designed to supply electricity around 65,000 homes. The New South Wales Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure recommended planning approval for the project in December 2025 and the application remains under assessment by the Independent Planning Commission.
Iberdrola Australia has also inaugurated the Smithfield battery in western Sydney. The inauguration was attended by the state’s Energy Minister, Penelope Sharpe. The project has a power capacity of 65 MW and an energy storage capacity of 130 MWh. The facility was completed ahead of schedule and has also secured a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement, awarded during the second auction round of the same state program. The Smithfield battery has been designed to supply electricity around 20,000 homes during peak periods.
Australia is a strategic market for the Iberdrola Group, which plans to invest more than €1 billion in the country between 2025 and 2028. Iberdrola Australia operates over 2,000 MW of generation capacity in operation or under construction, supplying clean energy to about 400 commercial and industrial customers.
