Wärtsilä Corporation, a Finland-based technology company focused on energy and marine solutions, has received an order to deliver the fourth stage of the Eraring battery energy storage system at Origin Energy's Eraring Power Station in New South Wales, Australia. The fourth-stage expansion adds 360 MWh, bringing total Eraring battery capacity to 700 MW and 3,160 MWh.

This represents Australia's largest battery energy storage system supporting large-scale grid operations. The extension adds capacity for grid balancing, with the Eraring battery delivering frequency control and firming services to the National Electricity Market (NEM). The Eraring expansion applies Wärtsilä GEMS for large-scale system management and integrates the Quantum platform with long-term operational support.

Origin Energy, Australia-based integrated energy company, selected Wärtsilä for Stage 1 of the Eraring battery project in 2023 and the following stages 2 and 3 in 2024. The fourth-stage expansion is set to commence in December 2025 and completion expected in early 2027. Upon completion, Wärtsilä's installed energy storage capacity in Australia exceeds 5.8 GWh.

Tamara de Gruyter, President of Wärtsilä Energy Storage and EVP at Wärtsilä, said that the Eraring battery expansion reflects continued collaboration with Origin Energy on large-scale battery energy storage deployment.
