A global developer of solar PV, battery storage, Sineng Electric has supplied power conversion technology for the Burgas battery energy storage project in Bulgaria. The operational standalone facility has a rated capacity of 150 MW/300 MWh, while Sineng reported total project capacity of 602 MWh. The company described Burgas BESS as the largest operational battery energy storage facility in Eastern Europe to date.
Solarpro Technology executed the project as EPC and O&M contractor. According to Sineng, the facility increases Bulgaria’s total energy storage capacity by 10% and is intended to provide balancing capability as more wind and solar generation is integrated into the electricity system.
For the project, Sineng supplied its 6.9 MW central PCS MV turnkey station. Each station integrates four EH-1725-HA-UD central power conversion system units with a transformer and ring main unit in a compact configuration. The solution supports storage durations ranging from one to eight hours, including 1-, 2-, 4-, 6- and 8-hour configurations.
Sineng said the PCS configuration reduces parallel connections by 50%. Its modular architecture is designed to simplify maintenance and reduce system downtime. The equipment also provides four-quadrant reactive power capability and grid-forming functionality.
The Burgas BESS is designed to participate in several grid services. These include peak shaving, load shifting, Frequency Containment Reserves and automatic Frequency Restoration Reserves. The system can store electricity during lower-demand periods and discharge during periods of higher consumption, while also responding to grid balancing requirements.
Grid-forming functionality provides the facility with voltage support and fast dynamic response capabilities. These functions are intended to strengthen the electricity system as variable renewable generation increases.
Rock Li, General Manager of Sineng Electric Europe, said large-scale storage is becoming increasingly important as renewable penetration grows and highlighted the role of the company’s PCS technology in supporting grid flexibility.
The operational project expands Bulgaria’s utility-scale storage infrastructure and demonstrates the deployment of central PCS technology for large standalone BESS facilities. It also adds storage capacity capable of participating in frequency reserves and other flexibility services within the country’s electricity system.
