EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

HyperStrong, a global provider of energy storage system solutions, has marked the start of construction of the GigaBattery Boxberg 400 battery energy storage project in Boxberg, Saxony, Germany. The project, owned by LEAG Clean Power GmbH, will provide 400 MW of grid-connection capacity and 1,600 MWh, or 1.6 GWh, of storage capacity.
The battery facility is being developed across a six-hectare remediated site formerly occupied by Plant II at the Boxberg power plant location. Once completed, the four-hour storage facility will support the integration of variable renewable generation and provide additional flexibility to Germany’s electricity system. According to the companies, its stored electricity could theoretically supply approximately 640,000 households for four hours.
HyperStrong is acting as the turnkey contractor for the battery energy storage system. Its scope covers the supply of battery systems using lithium-iron-phosphate cells, integration of electrical equipment and turnkey construction of the storage facility. The project will use HyperStrong’s HyperBlock III liquid-cooled utility-scale energy storage technology.
Supporting infrastructure will be delivered by additional project partners, while HyperStrong’s Germany-based team will work with LEAG Clean Power and the other companies involved during construction.
The Boxberg development forms part of LEAG’s GigawattFactory strategy, which is intended to combine renewable generation and energy storage infrastructure across the company’s energy sites. LEAG Clean Power said the battery will enable wind and solar generation to be used more flexibly while contributing to electricity grid stability and security of supply.
The project also forms part of the transformation of the Lusatia energy region, where existing energy infrastructure and former industrial sites are being adapted for new electricity generation and storage assets.
HyperStrong Senior Vice President Pingyang Wang said the company will deploy its BESS technology and EPC capabilities for the 1.6 GWh facility. LEAG Clean Power CEO Thomas Brandenburg said high-performance storage systems are required to integrate renewable generation and strengthen electricity supply.
With groundbreaking completed on August 31, 2026, the GigaBattery Boxberg 400 has moved into the construction phase. The project represents another large-scale battery storage development in Germany designed to provide grid flexibility and support greater integration of renewable electricity.
