US based renewable energy firm, METLEN is expanding its European battery energy storage activities through project delivery, financing and grid-integration milestones across the UK, Italy and Greece, strengthening the role of M RESET within its Energy Sector.
In the UK, METLEN has signed a Balance of Plant contract with Pulse Clean Energy for the 129 MW/362 MWh Penn BESS in the West Midlands. It is METLEN’s largest UK energy storage project to date by storage capacity. The company’s scope also covers grid connection works, with site energisation expected by the end of 2027. METLEN has delivered or is currently working on approximately 30 battery storage units across the UK, including standalone and hybrid or co-located projects, representing nearly 2 GWh of storage capacity.
In Italy, METLEN has secured €18 million in long-term financing for a 25 MW/75 MWh BESS in Apulia, in the province of Brindisi. The project became fully operational within the year and is supported by a seven-year physical Tolling Agreement with Dolomiti Energia Group. According to METLEN, the financing represents one of the first arrangements of its type in the Italian energy storage market. The company currently has an Italian portfolio that includes around 3 GWh of energy storage capacity.
METLEN is also advancing large-scale storage projects in Greece. In partnership with Karatzis Group of Companies, it has developed a 330 MW/790 MWh standalone BESS in the Thessaly region. METLEN describes it as the largest standalone battery storage unit planned to date in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. The project's output has been integrated into Greece's national electricity transmission system, representing a step toward full operational function and participation in grid services.
Separately, the 48 MW/96 MWh Aenaos BESS in Polygyros, Halkidiki, Central Macedonia, has recently been completed. The project was implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, with European Union/NextGenerationEU funding.
Together, the projects expand METLEN’s involvement in European grid-scale storage infrastructure intended to support renewable integration, grid flexibility, system stabilisation, energy security and reduced renewable energy curtailment.
