RWE starts construction of 236 MW Hambach battery storage project

Germany-based RWE, an energy company focused on renewable energy generation, energy storage and electricity trading, has started construction of a 236 MW / 470 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Hambach in Germany's Rhenish mining area. The project forms part of the region's transition from conventional energy generation to renewable energy and energy storage infrastructure. 

Construction activities are already under way, with the first shipment of 128 lithium-ion battery containers delivered to the project site. The battery storage system is scheduled to enter operation in 2027. 

Once commissioned, the BESS will store surplus electricity generated from wind and solar power plants during periods of high renewable output. The stored electricity will then be supplied back to the grid when demand increases or renewable generation declines. The system will also respond to grid fluctuations within fractions of a second, helping maintain grid frequency and reliability. 

In addition to energy storage, the project will provide inertia services, supporting grid stability as Germany continues replacing conventional thermal generation with renewable energy sources. These services help stabilise the electricity network by responding rapidly to changes in system frequency. 

The Hambach battery project forms part of a broader renewable energy development programme across the Rhenish mining region. The Hambach site already hosts around 50 MWac of solar generation capacity, including a solar power plant integrated with battery storage. 

Further renewable energy projects are also progressing nearby. In the Manheimer Bucht area, located near the future Hambach lake, construction is under way on a 14.8 MWac solar park together with an 80 MWh battery energy storage system. Wind and solar generation capacity across the wider region also continues to expand as Germany advances its energy transition. 

The latest battery installation adds to RWE's growing global energy storage portfolio. According to the company, it currently operates approximately 1.7 GW of battery storage capacity worldwide, while an additional 2.5 GW of battery storage projects are under construction. The Hambach project will strengthen RWE's portfolio of grid-scale storage assets designed to improve renewable energy integration, enhance grid flexibility and support power system reliability.
