ENGIE commissions 100 MW BESS across two sites in Scotland

Two 50 MW/100 MWh BESS facilities at Cathkin and Broxburn have entered full commercial operation, adding 100 MW/200 MWh of storage in Scotland. The two-hour systems participate in UK electricity and balancing markets, using ENGIE’s ORUS optimisation platform to manage grid response and market participation.

ENGIE, a global energy company active in renewable power, battery storage and energy management, has reached full commercial operation at its Cathkin and Broxburn Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities in Scotland. The two sites add a combined 100 MW/200 MWh of storage capacity to the company’s UK portfolio. 

The Cathkin facility, located near East Kilbride, and the Broxburn facility, west of Edinburgh, each have a capacity of 50 MW/100 MWh. Both systems provide two hours of storage and are designed to store surplus electricity before discharging it to the grid when required. 

The facilities participate in UK electricity and balancing markets, responding to changes in electricity supply and demand. Their operation is supported by ORUS, ENGIE’s AI-driven optimisation platform, which uses real-time data, analytics and automated market participation to manage the batteries across multiple revenue streams. 

The projects provide rapid-response grid services and support the integration of renewable generation into the electricity system. Battery storage can absorb electricity during periods of surplus generation and discharge it during periods of higher demand or when required by the grid.

The projects involved ENGIE teams working across development, construction, operations, energy management, trading and digital systems. The two facilities also contribute to ENGIE’s target of reaching 95 GW of installed renewable and storage capacity globally by 2030.
