Chinese battery manufacturer specializing in lithium-ion batteries and battery energy storage systems (BESS) for utility-scale, commercial, and industrial applications CORNEX New Energy Co., Ltd., has announced that its battery energy storage portfolio in Bulgaria has officially entered the partial operational phase, marking a milestone in the company's expansion across Eastern Europe. Developed in partnership with EPC contractor SUNOTEC, the projects form part of Bulgaria's growing energy storage infrastructure designed to support renewable electricity integration and improve grid flexibility.
The portfolio has a combined storage capacity of 1,020 MWh and is being deployed across multiple locations, including Pleven. The projects are supported under the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy's National Infrastructure for Storage of Electricity from Renewable Sources (RESTORE) program, which is financed through the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
For the deployment, CORNEX has supplied 204 of its proprietary M5 high-voltage liquid-cooling battery containers, each offering 5.015 MWh of storage capacity. The containers incorporate the company's self-developed 314Ah energy storage battery cells which is designed specifically for stationary storage applications.
According to CORNEX, the battery cells will provide a cycle life of up to 12,000 cycles while delivering an energy density of 185 Wh/kg. The liquid-cooling design is intended to improve thermal management, operational efficiency and system reliability while supporting long-term performance under utility-scale operating conditions.
The M5 battery container platform is engineered to balance energy density, safety, operating efficiency, and lifecycle performance. The modular architecture also enables deployment across different grid applications, including renewable energy integration, peak shaving, and grid balancing services.
The Bulgaria portfolio represents one of the larger battery storage deployments currently progressing under the country's RESTORE initiative. As renewable electricity capacity continues to increase, large-scale battery storage is expected to play an increasingly important role in balancing variable generation, reducing grid congestion and improving system reliability.
In the case of CORNEX, the milestone highlights its success in expanding into the European energy storage market and which shows the application of its innovative batteries in large-scale installations. Moreover, the CORNEX project signifies the ongoing collaboration of Chinese technology providers and European renewable energy firms in deploying batteries as part of their plans for decarbonization and grid development.
