Commercial operations have begun at the Aratina 1 hybrid renewable project in California, adding 200 MW of solar generation and 500 MWh of battery storage to the grid. The project marks Avantus' first operating asset as an independent power producer and supplies clean electricity under long-term community choice agreements.
Markations of a major corporate evolution are underway as clean energy developer Avantus officially brings its flagship Aratina 1 project into commercial operation in Kern County, California. The utility-scale asset delivers 200 MW of solar power and 500 MWh of battery energy storage capacity directly to the California power grid. Serving as a critical proof point in Avantus’ strategic transition from clean energy developer to long-term Independent Power Producer (IPP), the project reinforces grid reliability while supplying clean energy to local communities.
The Aratina 1 facility is the first operational asset that Avantus plans to own and operate over the long term as part of its expanding IPP portfolio. By maintaining a controlling ownership stake, the company aims to strengthen its recurring revenue model while contributing reliable renewable electricity to California's power system.
The project's electricity production is tied up with 3CE and SVCE under long-term contracts through which all the electricity produced from this facility will be sold to them. It will provide an adequate amount of clean electricity that will be sufficient to meet the electricity needs of over 105,000 homes in California on an annual basis. Through the combination of solar generation and battery storage, this facility will allow shifting of renewable energy to higher electricity demand times.
Project financing exceeded $500 million and was arranged by a consortium led by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Truist Securities, ING Capital and Mizuho. In addition, Truist Bank committed $300 million in tax equity financing, supporting project development and long-term investment.
Construction of Aratina 1 generated approximately 500 jobs at peak activity, while long-term operational roles will continue to support the regional economy. Avantus has also established the Boron Community Partnership Panel, a community-led initiative designed to guide investments in local education, youth development, civic programs and cultural projects.
Development of Aratina 2 which is located adjacent to Aratina 1, is progressing with construction already underway. The second phase recently secured more than $525 million in financing and is expected to begin commercial operations before the end of 2026.
After completing both these stages, the total power production of the Aratina Solar Center from both its solar panels and energy storage facilities will amount to 350 MW of solar power production and 952 MWh of battery energy storage. This project is anticipated to help address the rising energy needs of California.
