Two co-located battery energy storage systems with a combined capacity of 38 MW/152 MWh have entered operation at Stouby and Agersted in Denmark. Integrated with existing solar parks, the projects support grid flexibility, ancillary services and European Energy’s hybrid renewable energy strategy.
European Energy, the Danish company developing and operating renewable energy plants, has installed two battery energy storage systems (BESS) of utility scale at Stouby and Agersted. Their total capacity is 38 MW/152 MWh and they complement the company's hybrid energy sources by being connected to the existing solar parks.
The largest BESS was installed at Stouby with the capacity of 28 MW/112 MWh and it is integrated into the solar park with the capacity of 88 MW. The project started its commercial operations in September 2024. The batteries are located at the same site with the solar park and are connected to the same grid. Thus, the surplus power generated during peak solar production can be accumulated in the batteries and then used to meet rising demand.
The Agersted site saw the integration of a 10 MW/40 MWh battery storage facility by European Energy in the already existing 31 MW solar park that came online in 2022. The entire process of the development, engineering, procurement, construction and integration of the battery system took just a year. The battery is expected to provide frequency regulation and balancing service while maximizing renewable energy generation through power storage.
According to the company, both projects were delivered through coordinated engineering, procurement, civil works, electrical installation and system integration activities completed within 12-month period. The installations demonstrate European Energy's capability to execute increasingly complex hybrid renewable energy projects on accelerated timelines.
The commissioning also supports the European Energy's long-term strategy of hybridizing renewable energy assets by integrating battery storage with solar generation. The company also stated that hybrid facilities improve investment attractiveness by combining stable renewable electricity production with operational flexibility and diversified revenue streams. This approach aligns with growing institutional investor interest in infrastructure assets capable of participating in multiple electricity markets while supporting grid reliability.
With the completion of the two projects, the European Energy has now grid-connected 96.75 MW of battery storage capacity in Denmark, providing more than 375 MWh of total energy storage. The company is also expanding its battery storage portfolio beyond Denmark and plans to inaugurate its first operational battery energy storage project in Lithuania in the near future while continuing battery deployment activities across Europe and Australia.
The Danish projects also focusing on the increasing role of hybrid solar-plus-storage systems in supporting renewable energy integration improving grid stability and enabling greater flexibility as electricity systems continue to incorporate larger shares of variable renewable generation.
