  • Previous German project: BESS Krumpa I, 50 MW/100 MWh

Contemporary Nebula Technology Energy (CNTE), a technology-based Lithium battery energy storage China-based company head quartered in Fuzhou City has supplied energy storage solutions for BESS Leuna 1 and BESS Leuna 2, in Merseburg, each with a capacity of approximately 50 MW/100 MWh, giving the two facilities a combined capacity of approximately 100 MW/200 MWh. Both BESS Leuna 1 and BESS Leuna 2 commenced operations in March 2026 and provide substantial battery storage capacity to the regional electricity system, additionally.

The projects strengthen CNTE’s presence in Germany’s rapidly developing energy storage market. They also demonstrate the company’s experience in supporting utility-scale battery storage deployments.

The two BESS projects are primarily designed to participate in market-based electricity price arbitrage. The storage facilities respond to changing market conditions while supporting more flexible electricity trading. Thereby, the systems can charge during periods when electricity prices are relatively low and discharge when prices rise.

These projects regulate the use of available storage capacity by adjusting charging and discharging activities owing to electricity market price signals. This market-oriented operation also demonstrates how large-scale BESS installations can contribute to a more flexible power system as electricity generation and demand patterns continue to change.

Large-scale battery energy storage systems such as BESS Leuna 1 and BESS Leuna 2 can provide this flexibility by storing electricity when market conditions are favorable and discharging when demand and market prices rise. Their ability to respond quickly to market signals makes battery storage an increasingly important component of the country’s evolving energy infrastructure.

The BESS Leuna 1 and BESS Leuna 2 projects were built on CNTE’s previous experience. The company had earlier supplied an energy storage system solution for the 50 MW/100 MWh BESS Krumpa I project in Germany.

CNTE further expands its portfolio of large-scale BESS deployments in Germany by installing BESS Leuna 1 and BESS Leuna 2. It also specializes in market-based energy storage systems. Therefore, the project supports the country’s transition towards a flexible and renewable energy system.

The combined 100 MW/200 MWh capacity of the two Leuna facilities represents a significant deployment of battery storage and highlights the growing role of utility-scale BESS projects in Germany’s energy market. The combined 100 MW/200 MWh capacity of the two Leuna facilities underscores the increasing importance of utility-scale BESS projects in Germany's evolving energy landscape.
