Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), India's central transmission utility, has invited bids for a long-term agreement (LTA) covering the design, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of 500 MW/1,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across India. The tender was published on July 16, 2026 under an open procurement process.
The tender seeks contractors for Category-A 2-hour BESS projects to be executed on a site destination basis. The procurement covers the complete engineering, equipment supply, installation, testing and commissioning of battery energy storage systems deployed at multiple locations across the country.
Issued under Tender Reference No. CC/T/W-BESS/DOM/A04/26/09605, the procurement will be conducted through POWERGRID's PRANIT e-tendering portal under RFX Number 5007000201. The company has stated that the tender complies with the provisions of the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order (PPP-MII).
According to the tender schedule, the pre-bid meeting is scheduled for July 28, 2026 allowing prospective bidders to seek technical and commercial clarifications before submitting proposals. Bid submissions will remain open until August 17, 2026, with the bids scheduled to be opened later the same day.
The tender follows Long-Term Agreement (LTA) model enabling POWERGRID to establish a framework for deploying battery energy storage systems across multiple future projects. Such agreements can streamline procurement while supporting faster execution of grid-scale storage installations as demand increases.
The 500 MW/1,000 MWh procurement reflects continued investment in utility-scale battery storage to enhance grid flexibility which support renewable energy integration and improve system reliability. Two-hour battery storage systems are increasingly being deployed to manage peak demand, balance intermittent renewable generation and provide ancillary grid services.

The latest procurement adds to the country's expanding pipeline of utility-scale storage assets intended to strengthen transmission infrastructure and facilitate higher renewable energy penetration.
