Sungrow, a China-headquartered provider of renewable energy power conversion and energy storage solutions, is supplying battery energy storage technology for MaxSolar's grid-friendly battery storage cluster in Bavaria, Germany. The partnership includes the 25 MWh Wutzldorf Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and the larger 100 MWh Winterschneidbach project, creating a combined regional storage portfolio of 125 MWh designed to enhance electricity grid flexibility and renewable energy integration.
The Wutzldorf project marks Bavaria's first grid-friendly storage project developed under Section 11a of Germany's Energy Industry Act (EnWG). Following contract signing at the end of 2025 and a groundbreaking ceremony in early June 2026, Sungrow completed delivery of its PowerTitan 2.0 battery energy storage solution for the site in mid-June. The project is scheduled to enter operation in the coming weeks.
The Wutzldorf facility has been designed as part of a regional battery storage cluster that provides operational flexibility for both electricity networks and energy markets. Through intelligent charging and discharging strategies, the storage system helps relieve the distribution network during periods of high solar generation while supporting demand during peak electricity consumption. This approach enables greater integration of renewable energy while improving local grid stability.
The second project in the cluster, Winterschneidbach, will provide 100 MWh of storage capacity, with equipment delivery planned for November 2026. According to the companies, it will become one of Germany's largest grid-friendly battery storage facilities operating within a distribution network. Together, the two projects will serve as pilot installations demonstrating how battery storage systems of different capacities can operate as coordinated regional assets to support distribution grid operations.
Sungrow is supplying its PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage platform for both facilities, enabling standardized technology deployment across the cluster. The company stated that the projects demonstrate how utility-scale battery storage can contribute to distribution network flexibility, renewable energy integration and grid-support services while responding to the increasing need for flexible electricity infrastructure.
MaxSolar said the Wutzldorf project represents an important step in its regional battery storage cluster strategy, complementing the larger Winterschneidbach installation. Once operational, the combined 125 MWh portfolio is expected to provide additional balancing capability for Bavaria's electricity network while supporting the continued expansion of renewable generation across southern Germany.
