ENGIE Chile commissions 251 MW Libélula and Los Loros BESS

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Two battery storage projects have entered commercial operation in Chile, adding 251 MW to the National Electric System. BESS Libélula and BESS Los Loros represent a combined US$283 million BESS investment and increase ENGIE Chile’s operational battery storage portfolio to 663 MW.

ENGIE Chile, a remewable energy company, has placed BESS Libélula and BESS Los Loros into commercial operation, adding a combined 251 MW of battery storage capacity to Chile’s National Electric System. The two projects represent a combined BESS investment of $283 million and increase ENGIE Chile’s operational BESS portfolio in the country to 663 MW.

PV & BESS Libélula is located in the communes of Colina and Tiltil, about 40 kilometers north of Santiago in the Metropolitan Region. The overall complex represents an investment of $320 million, including $219 million allocated to the battery storage system. The BESS is commercially operational, while the photovoltaic facility is fully energized and progressing through the process of obtaining commercial operation status.

The Libélula solar plant has a maximum gross capacity of 140 MW and comprises 245,560 solar panels. Its battery system provides 203 MW of maximum gross power and 1,034 MWh of storage capacity using 208 lithium-ion battery containers. The system provides five hours of discharge duration. ENGIE described Libélula as its first hybrid project in Chile designed from the outset to combine solar generation and battery storage at the same facility.

The Libélula complex connects to the National Electric System through a substation and an approximately 16-kilometer, 220 kV transmission line linked to the El Manzano Substation. The project also incorporates 2,311 low-carbon NX Horizon solar trackers manufactured using steel produced with electric arc furnace technology.

BESS Los Loros is located at ENGIE’s existing Los Loros Photovoltaic Park in Tierra Amarilla, Atacama Region, converting the facility into a solar-plus-storage project. The battery represents an investment of $64 million and provides 48 MW of maximum gross power and 275.23 MWh of storage capacity.

Los Loros comprises 63 lithium iron phosphate battery containers. The system stores electricity generated by the solar facility during the day for delivery to the electricity system during periods of higher demand.

With both systems commercially operational, ENGIE Chile has expanded its ability to store and manage renewable generation across different regions of the country while increasing its operational BESS capacity to 663 MW.
