FlexGen Power Systems, a US-based battery energy storage system and energy management software provider, has announced the continued expansion of its partnership with Lightshift Energy across 16 battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Massachusetts, Virginia and Vermont. The collaboration covers new battery storage deployments and upgrades to existing facilities across the PJM and ISO-NE markets.
Six projects have been completed, providing more than 25 MW / 85 MWh of storage capacity. Another ten projects, representing over 55 MW / 200 MWh, are under construction. Lightshift develops, owns and operates the facilities, while FlexGen supplies energy storage software and services, including its HybridOS energy management system (EMS).
The companies began working together in 2024 when FlexGen deployed HybridOS at Lightshift's battery storage project in Groton, Massachusetts. Located near a local substation, the facility provides peak shaving during high-demand periods to support grid reliability and reduce electricity costs for the surrounding community.
The partnership subsequently expanded to additional projects involving different battery manufacturers, utility customers and applications.
More recently, FlexGen and Lightshift completed an integration and upgrade at Lightshift's BESS facility in Danville, Virginia. The site provides flexible capacity to Danville Utilities for peak shaving and demand response programs during periods of high electricity demand.
The upgrade involved replacing the battery management system (BMS) and EMS and adding batteries. These improvements increased the facility's capacity by 14%, strengthened grid stability and extended the storage asset's operating lifespan.
The companies also plan to expand their collaboration through additional projects, including Danville II, a second 11 MW battery project with Danville Utilities. The facility will operate as a peak-shaving asset, supporting the utility's efforts to manage electricity costs for residents and accommodate regional load growth.
FlexGen HybridOS will serve as the EMS for the ten additional projects currently under construction. The software is designed to improve system uptime, performance and reliability across different battery storage configurations.
According to FlexGen, HybridOS is compatible with more than 80 configurations of batteries and power conversion systems (PCS). Its modular and scalable architecture allows operators to adjust software configurations according to site-specific, hardware and regulatory requirements.
The expanded partnership combines new battery storage development with improvements to existing assets. It is intended to help utilities manage growing electricity demand, reduce peak-period costs and strengthen grid reliability across the participating markets.
The companies have not disclosed a total contract value or completion dates for the ten projects under construction.
