Singareni Collieries Company Limited has reported operational savings from a 1 MW Battery Energy Storage System linked to its 28 MW solar plant at Mandamarri in Telangana. The ₹2.5 crore pilot project stored 3,35,485 surplus electricity units over four months, generating savings of ₹25.66 lakh by utilizing excess solar power that would otherwise be exported to the grid without compensation. The project demonstrates how BESS can improve renewable energy utilization and reduce energy losses for industrial captive solar installations.

Indian coal producer Singareni Collieries Company Limited has reported encouraging operational and financial results from a 1 MW BESS installed alongside its 28 MW solar power plant in Mandamarri. This is the first such project implemented in the state of Telangana under government direction.
The company said the pilot-scale BESS project was commissioned around four months ago as an auxiliary facility to Mandamarri solar plant following directives from A. Revanth Reddy and Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu. Singareni invested approximately Rs.2.5 crores in the project.
The battery storage system was developed to address a long-standing issue associated with surplus electricity generated from in-house solar projects connected to the Telangana grid. While electricity required for local consumption is utilized under the existing power purchase arrangement, excess electricity generated beyond local demand has traditionally been supplied to the grid without financial compensation from the state distribution companies.
Singareni currently operates solar plants with a combined installed capacity of 245.5 MW across eight locations. Of this, 147 MW has been categorized as open-access capacity, while the remaining 98.5 MW operates as in-house generation connected to Telangana’s power network.
The 28 MW Mandamarri solar plant supplies electricity for mines and residential colonies in Mandamarri and Srirampur areas. However, after meeting local demand, additional electricity remained unutilized from a revenue perspective. To improve value realization from this excess renewable generation, the company installed the 1 MW BESS unit at the site in January this year.
According to the company, the storage system has since enabled 3,35,485 units of surplus electricity which is to be stored and later utilized when required instead of being exported free of cost to the grid. As a result, Singareni has achieved financial savings of Rs.25,66,460 within the initial operating period.
Singareni management described the BESS project as successful, which was established experimentally under the directions of the State Government. Because the BESS unit with just 1 MW capacity could save such a substantial amount of electricity and generate significant financial benefit. The management also indicated that additional renewable energy and storage projects could be considered in the future in line with the Telangana government’s clean energy and energy-transition objectives.
