Global renewable energy company Sonnedix has commenced operations at two hybrid solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in northern Portugal. Sonnedix Acail and Sonnedix Felgueiras are the company's first large-scale hybrid solar and battery installations to become operational worldwide. The projects are also the first hybrid installations in Portugal operating with connections to the national distribution grid. Sonnedix announced the milestone on 27 October 2026.
Sonnedix Acail combines 28.3 MWp of solar photovoltaic capacity with a 60.2 MWh battery energy storage system. Sonnedix Felgueiras integrates 39.9 MWp of solar generation with 80.3 MWh of battery storage. Together, the two facilities provide 68.2 MWp of solar capacity and 140.5 MWh of battery storage, strengthening the company's hybrid renewable energy portfolio in Portugal.
Both battery storage systems were developed alongside their respective solar power plants. The installations share the same fenced perimeter, allowing Sonnedix to use construction synergies and optimise project implementation. This integrated development approach has also preserved the surrounding landscape without requiring additional land for battery storage infrastructure.
The two BESS installations are now operating in hybrid mode with full grid charging capacity. Their configuration combines renewable electricity generation and storage within the same project infrastructure. The facilities support Sonnedix's strategy of integrating solar generation, battery storage, electricity trading and advanced energy management into its energy solutions.
In March 2026, Sonnedix announced financing arrangements for both projects. The financing represented one of Portugal's first structured transactions involving commercial banks for hybrid solar photovoltaic generation and battery storage facilities. The projects have now progressed from financing to operational status within the same year.
According to Sonnedix Chief Commercial Officer Gregorio Morales, battery storage is central to the company's development as a Next-Gen Independent Power Producer (IPP). The company intends to combine renewable generation and storage to deliver more flexible and predictable electricity products suited to industrial customer requirements.
Sonnedix Portugal Director Paulo Pimentel identified the commissioning of both projects as an important development in the company's Portuguese portfolio. The installations support greater electricity system flexibility and more efficient renewable energy integration.
The commissioning comes amid growing renewable electricity generation in Portugal. In January 2026, renewable sources accounted for 80.7% of the country's electricity generation, the highest share in the European Union, according to the announcement. The projects contribute to Sonnedix's global hybridisation strategy as the company develops integrated renewable energy solutions across its 12 GW portfolio.
