IndiGrid, an India-based infrastructure investment trust, has brought its 250 MW/500 MWh standalone BESS in Rajasthan, India, into commercial operation. The plant is owned by Rajasthan BESS Private Limited (RBPL), a special purpose vehicle of IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust, which reached its commercial operation date (COD) on 27 October 2026. The trust informed the stock exchanges of the COD on 28 October.

The project had been awarded to IndiGrid in November 2024 by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN), which had run a tariff-based competitive bidding process for it. The Battery Energy Storage Service Agreement was signed in December 2024, and the plant has since been built on a build, own and operate (BOO) basis, in partnership with AmpereHour Energy. Its 500 MWh of storage is able to supply the full 250 MW for two hours.

With the COD, the 12-year contract period under that agreement has now begun. According to the filing, the project will earn an annual revenue of more than INR 71 crore over its concession tenure, so the plant has added a contracted income to the trust that is fixed for the full term.

The ownership of RBPL is also to change after the COD. The project was developed in partnership with British International Investment (BII) and KNI India AS, a joint investment vehicle of Norfund and KLP, and both of them presently hold minority stakes in the company. IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust is to provide BII and KNI with an exit under the terms of the share purchase agreement and the InvIT regulations, and the stock exchanges will be informed when it has been done.

The plant has entered service at a time when India's storage tenders are growing larger. In October alone, SECI sought bids for 800 MW/3,200 MWh of standalone BESS, POWERGRID invited bids for 750 MWh in Telangana, and MAHAGENCO asked for 1,600 MWh in Maharashtra. The government has also approved the GEC-III scheme, under which 50 GWh of BESS is planned by FY 2032-33, and RBPL's 500 MWh is therefore an early part of the capacity that these tenders and the scheme are meant to build.
