EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Japanese battery manufacturer PowerX has secured an order from Tokai Rika for four Mega Power 2500 BESS units totalling 10.0 MWh. Scheduled for operation in November 2027, the installation in Aichi Prefecture will support electricity cost reduction, solar energy utilisation and demand response. The project has been selected for a Japanese government subsidy.

  • Company: PowerX, Inc.

  • Customer / Operator: TOKAI RIKA CO., LTD.

  • Project: Tokai Rika Head Office & Plant BESS

  • Location: Oguchi Town, Aichi Prefecture, Japan

  • Product: Mega Power 2500

  • Number of Units: 4

  • Total Nominal Capacity: 10.0 MWh

  • PCS Output: 2,500 kW

  • Battery Chemistry: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)

Japan-based battery energy storage manufacturer PowerX, Inc. has received an order from TOKAI RIKA CO., LTD. for four Mega Power 2500 Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) units, with a combined nominal storage capacity of 10.0 MWh. Announced on 19 October 2026, the systems will be installed at Tokai Rika's Head Office & Plant in Oguchi Town, Niwa District, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in November 2027.

The order represents the second deployment of PowerX battery storage technology within the Tokai Rika Group, following an earlier installation at its subsidiary, TOKAI RIKA NExT CO., LTD. The new installation will support the manufacturing facility's electricity management, renewable energy utilisation and participation in demand response programmes.

The BESS will help reduce electricity costs through peak shaving and by shifting electricity purchases to periods when power prices are lower. It will also store surplus electricity generated by the plant's existing solar power facilities, enabling greater utilisation of renewable electricity within its operations.

Beyond on-site energy management, the battery system will participate in demand response (DR) activities. Charging and discharging will be coordinated during periods of tight electricity supply or when renewable energy generation is expected to be curtailed. These functions are intended to support grid stability while improving electricity management at the manufacturing facility.

The project has been selected for financial support under Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) FY2025 supplementary budget programme. The subsidy supports the introduction of large-scale commercial and industrial energy storage systems to promote renewable energy adoption.

The installation comprises four Mega Power 2500 battery containers, each measuring 10 feet and conforming to ISO standards. The units use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, with each container offering 2,507 kWh of nominal storage capacity and 2,256 kWh of rated capacity.

The combined system has a nominal capacity of 10.0 MWh and a Power Conversion System (PCS) output of 2,500 kW. According to PowerX, its storage capacity is equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of approximately 940 average Japanese households.

The Mega Power 2500 systems are manufactured at PowerX's production facility in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Tokai Rika will operate the installation once commissioned.

Through this order, PowerX aims to expand the adoption of domestically developed and manufactured BESS technology, supporting manufacturing-sector decarbonisation, more efficient renewable energy utilisation and electricity supply stability.
