BW ESS is an energy storage owner-operator within BW Group. The company operates in the UK, Australia, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Sweden. It holds more than 540 MWh of operating battery storage, with around 12 GWh under construction.
The company has acquired two utility-scale standalone battery storage projects in Spain from Navacant, a Spanish renewable energy developer founded in 2022. The projects are located in the Valencia region and have capacities of 99 MW and 27 MW. Combined, they total 126 MW and up to 675 MWh.
Development on the projects began around 18 months ago. Both are expected to reach Ready-to-Build status in 2027. Commercial operations are targeted for 2028.
Isaac García Moreno, Executive Director at BW ESS, said the company plans to grow its Spanish storage platform through both greenfield development and acquisitions. He said Navacant's track record, along with the projects' scale and grid access rights, matched the criteria BW ESS looks for when building its storage portfolio.
Under the agreed structure, CST Energy will continue leading the projects through their remaining development phase. Once the assets reach Ready-to-Build status, BW ESS will take over delivery through construction and into operations. BW ESS intends to own and run the assets over the long term.

Spain's energy system is adding storage capacity as it integrates more variable renewable generation. Battery projects are increasingly used to help balance supply and demand and support grid resilience as solar and wind output grows.
