The company has announced a new energy park near its planned battery cell production site in Mariestad, Sweden. The initiative will combine a large-scale battery storage facility with a future test bed for innovative energy solutions.
In its first phase, the energy park will provide approximately 70 MW of power and 260 MWh of battery storage capacity, according to Volvo Group. The company says the energy park will be one of the largest in Sweden.
The storage system will use Volvo Battery Energy Storage Systems, supplied by Volvo Energy. The stored electricity will support the regional grid through flexibility services, allowing power to flow back into the local network when demand rises.
Volvo Group says the system will strengthen local grid stability and resilience. The company also sees the project as part of its wider efforts to develop more flexible energy systems and support decarbonization.
The park is planned to be operational by 2027. Once operational, it will also serve as a demonstration facility for customers and partners, allowing them to see energy solutions operating at real scale and supported by actual business cases.
The energy park will be next to Volvo Group's planned battery cell plant in Mariestad, where production is expected to begin after 2030. Together with the existing powertrain plant in nearby Skövde, the two sites form part of a wider industrial cluster that Volvo Group is developing in the region.
Lars Stenqvist, who is leading Mariestad site development at Volvo Group, called the initiative a step toward a more flexible energy system. He described the project as a natural next step in the development of the company's operations and said the energy park will support Volvo Group's and Sweden's decarbonization efforts.
The approximately 70 MW/260 MWh storage facility will therefore serve both an operational role in supporting the regional electricity system and a demonstration role for future energy solutions.
