China-based battery energy storage technology company HiTHIUM has announced an agreement with Statkraft to supply battery energy storage systems and long-term technical support for the Montes de Cierzo Wind Farm in Navarra, Spain. HiTHIUM develops battery cells and integrated BESS solutions for utility-scale, commercial and industrial applications.
Under the agreement, HiTHIUM will deliver six Infinity-Block battery energy storage units, each with a storage capacity of 5.016 MWh, providing a combined capacity of 30.1 MWh. The project also includes the supply of a power conversion system (PCS) from a Spanish manufacturer, forming a turnkey battery storage solution. The BESS will support the wind farm by smoothing renewable power output and providing ancillary services including frequency regulation, peak shaving and valley filling to improve wind energy utilisation.

HiTHIUM's Infinity-Block systems use liquid cooling technology to maintain stable operating temperatures under Spain's climatic conditions, where summer temperatures can exceed 40°C and winter temperatures can fall to freezing. The systems are equipped with the company's 314 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic battery cells designed for long cycle life and utility-scale energy storage applications.
The battery storage project forms part of Statkraft's repowering programme for the Montes de Cierzo Wind Farm in Tudela, Navarra. Originally commissioned in 2000, the wind farm supplied electricity for more than 41,000 homes. The first phase of the repowering programme, completed in spring 2026, replaced 44 older wind turbines with ten new turbines. The second phase will integrate the battery energy storage system while replacing the remaining 41 turbines with four new turbines.
During the first phase, Statkraft reused or recycled most of the dismantled materials, including nearly 2,000 tonnes of steel, along with aluminium, copper, fibreglass and other components. Following completion of the repowering programme, the wind farm's installed capacity will increase from 60 MW to 90 MW, while annual electricity generation is expected to double to around 300 GWh.
