A grid-forming BESS in Uzbekistan’s Namangan Region has completed whole-station black start validation using technology supplied by Sineng Electric, a China-based manufacturer of PV inverters and energy storage power conversion systems. The test covered a 100 MW/200 MWh section of a project with a total capacity of 119.25 MW/265 MWh. The installation uses lithium iron phosphate battery technology and Sineng Electric's 1,250 kW central PCS.
The validation simulated a complete grid blackout to assess whether the system could restore electricity independently without an external power supply. During the test, the PCS established a stable local grid from zero-voltage and zero-frequency conditions. The restoration process also tested the system against circulating currents during parallel operation, transformer magnetising inrush currents, and sudden load impact currents.
Sineng Electric worked with the unnamed project owner and EPC contractor to prepare the black start implementation plan. The work covered system design, control parameter settings, protection coordination, and testing. Its on-site engineering team handled hardware, software, communication, and control-system activities during commissioning and validation.
The company presented the facility as the first large-scale grid-forming energy storage project in Uzbekistan to validate black start operations. Its role within the Uzbekistan 2030 Strategy includes strengthening the electricity system, integrating renewable generation and assisting grid recovery after major disturbances. Sineng Electric said the completed trial could provide technical guidance for upcoming grid-forming storage projects in neighbouring markets.
Sineng Electric supplies PV inverters, energy storage PCS, hydrogen-production power supplies, and power-quality equipment. The company operates four research and development centres. It was classified as a BloombergNEF Tier 1 power inverter manufacturer and ranked No. 5 globally for energy storage PCS shipments in 2024.
