Sungrow, a China-based PV inverter and energy storage system provider, has commissioned the Santong BESS in Paka, Malaysia, for Tenaga Nasional Berhad, which owns and developed the project. The 100MW / 400MWh grid-connected BESS is located in Terengganu and is intended to support Malaysia’s national power grid. The project is described as Malaysia’s first grid-forming grid-connected BESS project.
The project uses 90 units of Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage systems, identified as ST5015UX-4H + MVS5140-LS. Sungrow also supplied the FEMS, or Facility Energy Management System, for dispatch and grid support functions. The Santong BESS is designed to meet grid performance requirements and targets 88% round-trip efficiency in its first year of operation.
The system supports both grid-following and grid-forming operating modes. Its grid-support functions include fast active power ramping, Fast Frequency Response for frequency support and dynamic grid balancing, and voltage and reactive power control for voltage regulation and power quality. The project also includes grid-forming capabilities with voltage-source behaviour and autonomous voltage and frequency support.
The source lists inertial response, power oscillation damping, on-grid and off-grid operation, and microgrid applications among the grid-forming functions. The project also has station-level black start capability, allowing Sungrow’s grid-forming PCS to establish a stable AC network during blackout conditions without an external voltage or frequency reference. The black start function demonstrated multi-converter coordination, balanced power sharing, and system restoration.
Sungrow said its local service team, headquarters project delivery team, and grid-forming and microgrid R&D team supported execution from customized FAT testing to commissioning and grid connection. The project also contributed to Malaysia’s early grid-forming standard framework development. Sungrow stated that the project achieved one of the fastest BESS grid-connection timelines in the country and completed a 100MW full-power discharge test.
TNB Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid said the Santong BESS supports Malaysia’s power system and renewable energy integration. He also said the project’s rapid response capability supports electricity demand equivalent to approximately 40,000 households across the East Coast. Financial terms and detailed commercial operation timelines were not disclosed in the source.
