Rolls-Royce Power Systems, a business unit of Rolls-Royce plc, and Sunly, an independent power producer (IPP) and renewable energy developer, have agreed to deploy four battery storage projects in Latvia. Together, the systems will provide 490 MWh of storage capacity. The announcement was made at the inauguration of Sunly’s solar park in Valmiera, where the company also outlined plans to co-locate solar generation with battery storage.

Rolls-Royce will provide the battery systems utilizing its proprietary mtu EnergyPack technology. The projects will also leverage mtu EnergetIQ software platform to manage intelligent charging and discharging. Such batteries are designed to provide stabilization of the system and control changes in the amount of electricity produced through renewable sources.

The first facility of battery storage is going to be established in Valmiera by the beginning of 2027. The remaining three facilities will be ready for use later on during 2027. The integration of the storage units with renewable energy sources ensures that any additional electrical power produced by these sources will be stored and supplied at times when production levels fall.

According to the agreement, Rolls-Royce is the primary supplier of the battery hardware and its proprietary management software, as well as the partner responsible for full systems integration. According to Andreas Görtz, President of the Mobile & Sustainable Business Unit at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, combining hardware supply, software delivery and system installation under a single provider simplifies project delivery, mitigates technical risks and streamlines long-term system management.

Renewable energy investments and large-scale battery storage capacity are expanding across Latvia and across the Baltic region. Sunly Chief Executive Priit Lepasepp stated that the new installations are designed to maximize solar power efficiency by holding onto surplus daytime generation until it is needed most. This specific deployment strategy ensures a far more dependable stream of clean electricity for local power grids. Moreover, according to Lepasepp, complying with stringent cybersecurity standards in Europe necessitated working in conjunction with a regional company that had the required technical expertise within Latvia.

Besides Latvia, Sunly and Rolls-Royce have entered into an MoU for setting up another battery energy storage facility with 300 MWh of capacity in Risti, Estonia.

According to Rolls-Royce Power Systems, the company has supplied battery storage technology to over 200 projects globally. The firm noted that ongoing projects in Baltic region will bring the total installed battery storage capacity to over 1,500 MWh. Another large-scale project for battery storage systems for the Latvian transmission system operator AST was commissioned in 2025 and other contracts were won recently in Lithuania.

With the rise in renewable energy production capacity, authorities and power corporations within all three Baltic countries are increasing their investments into battery storage systems as protection against possible instabilities in electricity supplies.
