SPIE Belgium has been chosen by Tesla to deploy and integrate 180 Megapack energy storage systems for a major BESS project that is being developed by Storm in Kluisbergen. The total value of the project is more than EUR 100 million and consists of a high voltage substation, as well as an integration into the 380 kV transmission grid, which is being implemented via the use of Tesla Megapack 3 solutions.
PROJECT SNAPSHOT
Project: Kluisbergen Battery Storage Project

EPC Scope: Installation and high-voltage grid integration
Investment: More than EUR 100 million
Grid Connection: 380 kV transmission network
Status: Under construction

SPIE Global Services Energy, a subsidiary of French-based SPIE Group Belgium, has been selected by Tesla to install and connect 180 Megapack battery containers to the grid for a large-scale BESS project in Kluisbergen. The battery park in Ruien is one of the battery storage facilities currently under construction in Belgium with a total project value exceeding EUR 100 million and a storage capacity of several hundred megawatt-hours.
The project was developed by Storm. Storm will take care of siting in Kluisbergen, establish the capacity targets and decide on the number of Tesla Megapack 3 batteries to be used (180 units in this case), along with the usage for various functions like peak shaving, frequency regulation and renewables balancing.
Through the contract that has been signed with Tesla, SPIE Belgium is mandated to handle all-electrical integration of the installation. Tesla will be responsible for providing the Megapack, while SPIE Belgium will be responsible for handling the installation of batteries, installation of medium/high voltage cable, connection to transformers, connection to the power grid, construction of a high voltage substation and linking to the 380kV transmission network.
The project aims to ensure the stability and flexibility of the electricity system of Belgium through energy storage when there is excess generation of renewables and discharging it back into the system when it experiences peak demands. The energy storage system should improve grid stability and increase the integration of renewables in the energy transition strategy of Belgium.
The Tesla Megapack 3 that has been chosen to be used in the Belgian project is known for its high energy storage capacity in each unit, built-in inverters and transformers, artificial intelligence system for controlling, excellent heat and fire management and easy deployment from the factory itself. A single unit of the Megapack 3 can store an energy amount of 5 MWh, compared to the previous model's 3.9 MWh capacity. In the Megapack 3, large capacity 2.8-liter lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells are used for optimizing energy density and lifespan. Advanced fire prevention systems are installed in the megapack.
Jochen Dewaele, Project Manager at SPIE Belgium, said the project brings together several technical areas, including large-scale cabling work and high-voltage grid connection. He said the size of the installation and complexity of the grid integration make the project technically challenging and also reflecting SPIE Belgium’s work in battery storage and grid infrastructure.
The construction work has been commenced at the construction site. As per the plan, installation and grid connection would be conducted through SPIE Belgium starting from November 2026 while testing and commissioning would be done at the end of 2027.
