Centrica commissioned two battery energy storage systems in Borlänge, Sweden, with a combined capacity of 40 MW and expected annual output of 21,900 MWh. Delivered with Omexom, the projects enhance grid flexibility and renewable integration, while expanding Centrica Energy’s European BESS portfolio beyond 770 MW under contract as part of Centrica’s £4 billion clean energy investment strategy.

Centrica declared in late 2024 that it achieves around nine "ready-to-build" battery storage projects from Swiss renewables developer Fu-Gen AG, which will eventually total over 100MW of capacity across Sweden. These projects are designed to provide essential services to the Swedish national grid and helps to balance supply and demand as renewable energy adoption increases.
Among these two sites are now online and operational and are considered as a milestone in Centrica's focus on investing in green energy assets. Centrica brings the two BESS active in Borlänge, Sweden. The projects developed in partnership with Omexom, have a combined capacity of 40 MW and are now operational from April 14, 2026. The two systems are located in Borlänge, southern Sweden. The projects are expected to produce around 21,900MWh annually.
These live productions offer the grid with a flexibility to balance fluctuations in electricity production and consumption across the country and store renewable power when required. Battery storage enables better management of fluctuations in renewable generation by charging during periods of low demand and discharging when demand increases.
Centrica Energy uses its in-house optimisation platform to manage these assets in real-time, participating in spot and ancillary service markets to maximise asset value. These Borlänge sites are the first to come online among the nine "ready-to-build" BESS projects, which Centrica acquired.
Dave Kirwan, Managing Director of Centrica Power states that, battery storage will play an important role in supporting the transition of the energy system in UK as Centrica expands its investment in low-carbon flexibility and this will benefit everyone.
Centrica Energy will optimise the assets, improving its portfolio of over 770MW of BESS under contract across Europe. Battery output can be adapted in real-time delivering cost-effective energy storage that maximises the utilisation of green electricity available to the grid, whilst securing a stable return-on-investment.
The current project is the latest step in Centrica’s £4bn investment plans (targeted for completion by 2028) to support the UK’s transition to a more sustainable energy system, which includes investments in nuclear, hydrogen, solar power and battery storage.
Thibault Fauquant and Kristoffer Ekman, business unit manager of Omexom Conversion & Storage, and Kristoffer Ekman, Business Unit Manager of Omexom Göteborg Renewable Energies stated that Omexom teams supported Centrica as EPC contractor on the project. They also stated that the energisation follows months of engineering, system integration, commissioning, grid compliance, and performance testing activities.
Because of the energy shifting and real-time response, the project supports the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. The deployment of battery systems in regions with increasing renewable penetration provides flexibility to manage supply variability and maintain system balance.
