RWE builds 400 MW Lingen battery storage facility in Lingen

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 

RWE has initiated the development of a 400 MW / 800 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Lingen, Lower Saxony. Construction will begin in February 2026 after all required permits and planned to enter operation in 2028. The two-hour facility will provide balancing services, frequency regulation and grid stability, expanding RWE’s battery storage portfolio in Germany.

Germany-based global renewable energy company, RWE has initiated development of a 400 MW / 800 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) on a former industrial site in Lingen, Lower Saxony. The planned facility delivers its maximum output of 2-hours.

The company has taken the final investment decision, with construction scheduled to begin on 2 February after all required permits were secured. The facility is planned to enter operation in 2028 and is located on the former Dralon GmbH site northeast of the Emsland gas-fired power plant.

The project is developed on an area of about 8.5 hectares within the southern section of the industrial zone. More than 200 lithium-ion battery units will be deployed along with 100 inverters, over 50 medium-voltage transformers, two high-voltage transformers and two switch panels. It will connect to the electricity grid through the adjacent Hilgenberg substation, which is being built by transmission system operator (TSO) Amprion.

The Lingen BESS is designed to provide balancing energy, rapid response to short-term grid fluctuations, and instantaneous reserve for frequency stability.

RWE is expanding its battery storage portfolio across multiple markets, including Europe, the USA, and Australia. As of the end of the third quarter of 2025, the company operated around 1.2 GW of battery storage capacity, with more than 2.7 GW under construction. The Lingen project expands RWE’s battery storage portfolio in Germany.

Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation SE, stated that battery systems provide millisecond level response, complementing gas-fired generation in grid operations.
