EP Cube debuts stackable hybrid ESS for Europe

EP Cube, the energy storage arm of Canadian Solar, has presented the EP Cube energy storage system (ESS) during the TaiyangNews Inverters and Battery Storage Conference 2025. Andrea Praticò, Director of Sales of Energy Storage EP Cube explained that this ESS is designed for residential, smart homes, and small commercial power requirements in Europe.

According to Andrea Praticò ,the system integrates a hybrid inverter, battery management system, and lithium-iron-phosphate battery modules into a single enclosure, reducing the need for multiple external components. It supports both single-phase and three-phase configurations, enabling deployment across a wide range of electrical infrastructures.

The system architecture is based on a stackable design, allowing battery capacity to scale incrementally according to site requirements. Single phase EP Cube configuration is equipped with 5 kWh battery modules; it offers an energy storage capability range from 5 kWh to 20 kWh, by vertically stacking up to 4 modules. Single phase configuration supports both AC-coupled and DC-coupled configurations.

Three phase EP cube addresses larger residential and commercial use cases, offering a storage capacity ranging from 10 kWh up to 40 kWh per system, using stackable LFP battery modules. It can be scalable through parallel installations. The three-phase configuration is paired with a hybrid inverter featuring 4 independent MPPTs, enabling greater design flexibility for installations involving multiple orientations, mixed module types, or partial shading. Each battery module, with a plug and play design, weighs less than 42 kg, which simplifies transport, handling, and can be vertically installed over the base within 30 minutes.

The inverter operates with a low 80 V DC start-up voltage, allowing PV strings to be built with as few as two modules, which supports complex rooftop installations. Multiple EP Cube units can be connected in parallel to increase total storage capacity and power output for larger system requirements.

For backup operation, the presentation highlights that up to two EP Cube units can be connected through a Smart Gateway to deliver up to 24 kW of AC output power during grid outages or load-shedding events. This configuration enables continued power supply to critical loads when the grid is unavailable.
