Vena Energy has begun construction of the 408 MWh Tailem Bend 3 Battery Energy Storage System in South Australia. The project entered construction in December 2025 and is scheduled for commissioning in 2027. As the third phase of the Tailem Bend energy precinct, the standalone BESS expands the site’s evolution from solar generation to large-scale grid storage, supporting dispatchability, grid flexibility, and system reliability.

Singapore-based renewable energy developer, Vena Energy, subsidiary of Vena Group, has started construction of the 408 MWh Tailem Bend 3 Battery Energy Storage System in Tailem Bend, South Australia. The project entered construction in December 2025 and is scheduled for commissioning in 2027.
The Tailem Bend 3 BESS represents the third phase of Vena Energy’s Tailem Bend energy precinct. The site begun with the 127 MWdc Tailem Bend Solar Project, commissioned in 2019, before expanding under the Tailem Bend 2 Hybrid Project with 118 MWdc of solar capacity in 2023 and a 41.5 MWh battery system in 2024. With the Tailem Bend 3, the precinct has progressed from solar generation into larger-scale grid-connected energy storage.
Once operational, the BESS will operate as a long-term grid asset, supplying dispatchable storage capacity to South Australia’s electricity system during periods of variable generation and demand.
Construction of the Tailem Bend 3 BESS is expected to support employment during the construction phase, with procurement activities involving local contractors and suppliers where practicable. Construction has continued stakeholder coordination initiated during earlier Tailem Bend developments.
Owen Sela, Head of Australia at Vena Energy, said the Tailem Bend 3 BESS marks the company’s third energy storage project in Australia, adding to its grid-scale storage presence in the region. He said the project follows earlier Tailem Bend developments and continues engagement with local partners and community groups.
