ArcelorMittal,a Luxembourg-based integrated steel and mining company has announced three new renewable energy projects in India with a combined nominal capacity of about 1 GW across solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems. Upon Completion, the projects are expected to double the company’s renewable energy capacity to 2 GW in India and raise its global renewable energy portfolio to 3.3 GW.
Electricity generated from the projects is planned to be supplied to ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS), a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, in which ArcelorMittal holds a 60% stake and Nippon Steel holds 40%.
The first project is a 36 MW solar installation located in Amaravati, Maharashtra, with forecast completion scheduled for first half of 2027. This project is expected to deliver annual savings of CO₂ around 0.04 million tonnes. The second project, situated in Bikaner, Rajasthan, combines 400 MW of solar generation with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system This hybrid solar-storage project is planned for completion in first half of 2028 and is projected to deliver annual CO₂ savings of about 0.65 million tonnes.
The third project will be developed in Bachau, Gujarat, and integrates 250 MW of wind capacity, 300 MW of solar capacity, and 300 MWh of battery storage. The facility is scheduled for completion in first half of 2028, and is expected to achieve annual CO₂ savings of approximately 0.9 million tonnes. The project combines multiple generation technologies with storage to provide a more consistent electricity supply profile.
Total capital expenditure for the three projects is estimated at $0.9 billion, with all generated electricity supplied to AMNS India steelmaking operations, mainly supporting the Hazira plant in Gujarat. In parallel, AMNS India is developing a renewable project at the Bachau site comprising 300 MW of solar and 250 MW of wind capacity, with forecast annual CO₂ savings of 0.9 million tonnes. These additions will complement ArcelorMittal’s earlier 1 GW renewable project in India, which began supplying power to AMNS India earlier this year.
ArcelorMittal and AMNS India combined renewable projects in India are expected to deliver about 4 million tonnes of annual CO₂ savings once operational, supplying around 35% of Hazira electricity demand based on 2028 forecasts. According to the company, renewable projects in India, Brazil and Argentina are expected to total 3.3 GW of generation capacity.
