Neoen has entered into a seven-year battery tolling agreement with Uniper covering its 30 MW / 78 MWh Arneburg battery energy storage project in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, with the contract set to begin in 2027. Under the agreement, Uniper will manage the battery’s charging and discharging to maximize value across ancillary services and wholesale power markets, while Neoen will remain responsible for operating and maintaining the asset.

France-based renewable energy developer, Neoen has signed a tolling agreement with Uniper for its 30 MW / 78 MWh Arneburg battery energy storage system (BESS) in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The contract has duration of seven years and is scheduled to commence in 2027.
Under the agreement, Uniper, Düsseldorf-based Energy Company will have full control of the battery’s charging and discharging of the battery while Neoen will continue to manage the asset’s operation and maintenance. Uniper plans to optimize the asset across all revenue market channels from ancillary grid services to the wholesale market.
The Arneburg BESS represents Neoen’s first operational asset in Germany. Construction of the battery is currently at a mid-way through construction and is expected to be operational in 2026.
Neoen has been active in the German battery storage market since 2023, operating from its offices in Karlsruhe and Hamburg. Over this period, the company has established “a significant pipeline of projects”, focusing on large-scale standalone battery assets designed to support grid flexibility, balancing services, and energy trading requirements. The Arneburg project serves as an initial reference asset within this pipeline.
At a group level, Neoen’s global battery storage portfolio stands at 2.7 GW / 8.1 GWh in operation or under construction. The Arneburg BESS aligns with this portfolio approach and reflects the company’s entry into Germany’s utility-scale storage market.
Uniper operates in more than 40 countries and is active in European energy markets through flexible generation and gas trading. In Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands, the company produces power, supplies industrial and commercial customers, and applies battery tolling structures to optimize third-party storage assets.
Christophe de Branche, Director of Energy Management at Neoen, said that the agreement was concluded following cooperation between Neoen and Uniper and referenced Neoen’s existing battery storage project pipeline in Germany as a basis for future collaboration.
Carsten Poppinga, Chief Commercial Officer at Uniper SE, said the agreement added a battery tolling asset to Uniper’s portfolio and would allow the company to apply its optimization capabilities across power markets.
