Indian energy storage and battery technology company REPLUS Engitech is advancing its indigenous Battery Energy Storage System technology development through a government-backed research and development programme focused on advanced battery thermal management.

The programme builds on REPLUS’ existing laboratory and testing infrastructure, engineering expertise, proprietary innovations, patents and battery products developed for automotive and industrial-grade applications. Its latest R&D work is focused on thermal management as battery systems increase in capacity, energy density and operational complexity.

Higher energy densities, faster charging and discharging cycles, larger battery formats and demanding operating environments create additional requirements for controlling heat generation and dissipation. REPLUS is developing thermal-management technologies designed to maintain suitable battery operating temperatures across different loads, ambient conditions and duty cycles. The work targets improvements in system safety, efficiency, reliability and lifecycle performance, particularly under Indian operating conditions.

The programme also forms part of a broader technology roadmap extending beyond conventional BESS applications. REPLUS is targeting future applications in defence, marine, railways and space, where batteries may need to operate under extreme temperatures, vibration, space constraints and mission-critical conditions.

The government-backed programme will allow REPLUS to build on its existing laboratories, testing capabilities, patents and specialised battery technology expertise.

He identified advanced thermal management as an important factor in the safety, performance and bankability of next-generation storage systems.

REPLUS’ laboratory infrastructure supports evaluation of battery technologies, thermal behaviour and performance characteristics under controlled conditions. This is intended to support development from research and prototyping through validation and eventual commercial applications.

Alongside its R&D programme, REPLUS is scaling its Pune manufacturing facility, which currently has an initial capacity of 1 GWh. The company is combining research, testing, intellectual property, product engineering and manufacturing capabilities as part of its domestic technology development strategy.

The programme is intended to deepen REPLUS’ indigenous battery technology capabilities as energy storage requirements expand across grid, industrial and specialised applications in India.
