terralayr, a Germany-based energy storage and flexibility company, has brought a 55 MW multi-asset battery toll into full operation with Vattenfall. Under the seven-year agreement, Vattenfall can access flexibility from eight decentralised large-scale storage systems in Germany. terralayr said that the arrangement is the first operational multi-asset battery capacity toll in Europe and potentially worldwide.
The portfolio was ramped up in stages, starting with 5 MW in January 2026. Additional capacity was added in June and July, taking the contracted portfolio to 55 MW. terralayr said the system remained stable during the phased expansion.
Rather than assigning one physical battery to Vattenfall, terralayr combines the eight storage systems through its LAYR platform. The platform distributes Vattenfall's dispatch instructions across the portfolio, while terralayr manages technical aggregation, dispatch control and balancing group settlement. The batteries remain within terralayr's balancing group and ancillary services pool.
Vattenfall can use the contracted flexibility in wholesale electricity markets as well as FCR and aFRR markets. LAYR can also distribute dispatch instructions from other offtakers across the same storage portfolio. If one battery becomes unavailable, the platform can shift the dispatch schedule to the remaining assets.
The tolling structure gives Vattenfall access to storage flexibility without requiring it to own or operate the underlying batteries. terralayr also plans to connect additional storage assets to LAYR and add them to virtual portfolios. Tobias Geimer at terralayr referred to this approach as "One-Click Tolling." Björn Schneegans, Director Commodity Origination at Vattenfall, said the phased ramp-up showed that the portfolio could operate at the contracted capacity.
