The Indian Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), has projected that the country's energy storage requirement will increase more than tenfold over the next decade. The requirement is expected to rise from 87 GWh in FY2027-28 to 888 GWh by FY2035-36, driven by the planned deployment of BESS and Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs).
Installed capacity across the two storage technologies is also projected to increase steadily. PSP capacity is expected to reach 94 GW by FY2035-36, while BESS capacity is forecast to reach 80 GW during the same financial year. MoSPI linked the expansion to India's stated focus on grid reliability and higher renewable energy integration.
The projections are included in MoSPI’s quarterly update to the PAIMANA Performance Monitoring Dashboard. PAIMANA refers to Project Assessment, Infrastructure Monitoring and Analytics for Nation-building. The platform monitors infrastructure performance across civil aviation, roads, power, ports, telecommunications and railways.
The quarterly release added 44 indicators, taking the dashboard’s total coverage to 165 indicators. Beyond electricity, it reported 8.55 lakh mobile towers, a 3.7% YoY increase, while Base Transceiver Stations rose 7.4% to 32.25 lakh. Tele-density was recorded at 93.26% during FY2025-26. Electronic toll collection transactions increased 39.7% year on year to INR 88 crore up to May in FY2026-27. MoSPI positioned the dashboard as a consolidated digital resource for sectoral monitoring, interactive visualisation and analysis of historical trends. The ministry said the expanded platform is expected to support easier data access for policymakers, researchers and other interested parties.
