EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

BSW-Solar has reported Germany’s stationary energy storage system market has expanded fivefold over five years, exceeding 25 GWh of installed capacity. It also estimates close to 2.4 million systems are now in operation in the Germany. In 2025, nearly 600,000 new battery storage systems with total capacity of 6.5 GWh were commissioned, an increase of around 5% compared to 2024. Large-scale battery storage systems more than doubled, commercial installations increased by 30%, while residential demand declined 8%. BSW-Solar estimates total capacity would need to reach around 100 GWh by 2030.

  • Organization: BSW-Solar

  • Location: Germany

  • Market: Stationary Energy Storage Systems

  • Installed Capacity: More Than 25 GWh

  • Installed Systems: ~2.4 Million

  • 2025 Additions: ~6.5 GWh Across Nearly 600,000 Systems

The German Solar Industry Association, BSW-Solar, has reported that Germany’s stationary energy storage system (ESS) market has expanded significantly over the past five years, with installed capacity increasing fivefold to exceed 25 GWh. BSW-Solar estimates close to 2.4 million stationary battery systems now  in operation in the Germany.

BSW-Solar said that annual battery storage additions would need to more than double with regulatory adjustments, while total installed capacity would need to reach around 100 GWh by 2030.

In 2025, nearly 600,000 new stationary battery storage systems with a total capacity of approximately 6.5 GWh were commissioned- an increase of around 5% compared to 2024. According to BSW-Solar, the market for newly installed large-scale battery storage systems in the megawatt class boomed, more than doubled in size last year. The capacity of Commercial storage systems installed increased by around 30%.

BSW-Solar also expects large-scale BESS segment to continue to grow in 2026. According toassociation, the demand for residential storage systems declined by around 8% year-on-year (YoY). Growth in this segment will depend heavily on the regulatory framework for solar PV and heat pumps. It sees a combination of all 3 energy transition technologies – storage, solar PV, and heat pumps – as offering particular advantages, in terms of climate protection.

BSW-Solar estimates that the annual expansion of battery storage capacity would need to more than double to efficiently and largely transition the electricity supply to renewable energies in the coming years.

Carsten Körnig, Managing Director of BSW-Solar, said, “In order for storage systems to reach their full potential, grid connection procedures should be accelerated and grid fee regulations should include incentives for system service in the future”. He also said that the storage systems will work better if grid operators use more digital tools, so storage systems can be smoothly integrated into grid management.

Overall, the data shows that Germany has recorded strong growth in stationary battery storage capacity, while indicating the level of additional expansion required to meet future electricity system needs.
