EXECUTIVE SUMMAR

A 10 GWh annual energy storage manufacturing facility is planned for Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone, with Sungrow targeting operations from June 2027. Initial production will support the Sustainable Energy Valley project in Minya Governorate, for which the company will supply 4 GWh of energy storage systems.

 Company: Sungrow

 Facility: Energy storage manufacturing facility

Location: Suez Canal Economic Zone, Egypt

Annual Capacity: 10 GWh

Operations Start: June 2027

Initial Project: Sustainable Energy Valley

Project Location: Minya Governorate, Egypt

Energy Storage Supply: 4 GWh

A global manufacturer of solar photovoltaic (PV) inverters and energy storage systems (BESS) Sungrow has launched an energy storage manufacturing facility in Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone, with a planned annual production capacity of 10 GWh. Operations at the facility are scheduled to begin in June 2027, establishing local manufacturing capacity for energy storage systems serving projects in Egypt and the wider Middle East and Africa region.

Initial production from the facility will support the Sustainable Energy Valley project in Egypt’s Minya Governorate. The project is being jointly developed by the Egyptian government and Norwegian renewable energy company Scatec. Sungrow will supply 4 GWh of energy storage systems for the development.

The manufacturing facility adds a local production component to Sungrow’s existing activities in Egypt. According to the company, localized manufacturing is intended to improve delivery efficiency and provide more responsive support for renewable energy projects across the Middle East and Africa. Sungrow also plans to work with local companies and other stakeholders to develop supply-chain cooperation and local technical capabilities.

The announcement follows Sungrow’s involvement in the Abydos Phase II solar-plus-storage project in Aswan Governorate. The company supported the project’s commissioning and supplied 1.2 GW of photovoltaic capacity and 720 MWh of energy storage. According to Sungrow, the development is expected to become Africa’s largest single-site integrated solar-plus-storage project once fully operational.

The two developments indicate different aspects of Sungrow’s activity in Egypt. The Suez Canal Economic Zone facility focuses on establishing energy storage manufacturing capacity, while the Abydos Phase II project represents deployment of solar and storage systems at utility scale.

The planned 10 GWh facility could provide a domestic manufacturing base for future battery energy storage deployments, including the 4 GWh requirement associated with the Sustainable Energy Valley project. Local production may also reduce the distance between manufacturing and project deployment for regional developments.

Sungrow Vice President Thompson Meng said the company intends to deepen collaboration with local companies and stakeholders, including through supply-chain development and talent building. The facility therefore combines manufacturing expansion with Sungrow’s existing project supply activities in Egypt.
