Chile-based electricity generation company, Colbún has marked a key development stage in the construction of its 228 MW / 912 MWh Diego de Almagro Sur battery energy storage system (BESS), which begun in September 2025.
The company confirmed that the arrival of 70 battery units out of a total of 201 at the the project site. The project represents an initial investment of USD 200 million and is designed to integrate large-scale battery storage with existing solar generation assets in northern Chile.
These batteries were supplied by e-Storage, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar and were initially arrived at Puerto Angamos and were then transported from the La Negra industrial park in the Antofagasta Region to the project site in the commune of Diego de Almagro, Atacama region.
According to Company, the storage system is associated with the Diego de Almagro Sur photovoltaic park, a 232 MW plant that Colbún has operated since 2022. The facility is expected to supply electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 55,480 homes once fully operational. The construction phase is expected to create peak up to 150 jobs.
César Novoa, Manager of Photovoltaic and Battery Projects at Colbún said the first Solbank units advanced construction and will enable stored solar energy dispatch during non-solar hours. He added that the infrastructure enables renewable energy storage and dispatch during peak demand, supporting greater flexibility and efficiency in the power system.
