ACCIONA Energía, headquartered in Madrid, announced a 200 MW/1 GWh BESS project at the 238MWp Malgarida photovoltaic complex in Chile’s Atacama Desert. The company stated that the system is positioned to be one of the largest battery storage installations in Latin America, expected to come online in early 2027.
According to ACCIONA Energía, the system is designed to strore the energy generated during the day,and dispatch it at night enabling time-shifting of energy generated at the site. The company noted that these functions support operational flexibility within the wider power system.
The Malgarida battery is configured to deliver 200 MW of power for up to five hours and supports the company’s renewable operations in Chile, where it manages 922MW of wind and solar capacity. The sites include the Punta Palmeras (45 MW), San Gabriel (183 MW), and Tolpán Sur (84 MW) wind forms along with the El Romero (246MWp), Usya (64 MWp), Almeyda (62 MWp), and Malgarida (238 MWp) photovoltaic plants.
ACCIONA Energía is also developing further 1.5GWh Battery storage across three additional projects linked to its photovoltaic plants in Chile. The company stated that the projects reflect recent shifts in storage costs and the wider use of multi-hour systems. It also noted sector findings that utility-scale BESS units are used to support renewable integration and assist system operations during higher-demand periods.
